We'll meet in Portland at the Marriott Springhill Suites Hotel on Sunday morning at 8:00am and start riding after a short shuttle to Astoria. If you are flying, plan on arriving on Saturday and staying overnight so you are ready to go Sunday morning. If you are driving, you may leave your car at your hotel, the airport, or in Eugene (details in Riders Guide).
We start cycling just south of Astoria toward Cape Kiwanda today. Along the way we pass through the wonderful seaside towns of Cannon Beach, where the famous Haystack Rock dominates the shore,
and Rockaway Beach with its long, sandy beaches. We end our ride in Cape Kiwanda at our hotel just across from the beach.

Today we start our bike ride by leaving the Pacific Coast Hiway and heading inland on the 3 Capes Scenic Byway. We ride through mossy forests along the Cape Kiwanda Scenic Route before descending to the seaside town of Ocean Rock. After passing through the town of Neskowin, which means “Place of Plenty Fish,” we leave the main road again to wind through the forest on Slab Creek Road, part of the official Oregon Coast Bike Route. Our destination is Newport and the Best Western Agate Beach Inn, which sits right on the beach. Walk along the shores at night as the tide ebbs and flows.
76 miles / 3,500 ft. elevation gain
Our highlight for today will be the bike ride up Cape Perception and the "Devil's Churn," a narrow inlet that spits ocean spray several hundred feet into the air. We ride along cliffs overlooking the ocean as we climb up to the famous Sea Lion Caves before our descent toward Florence, Oregon. Don't forget to stop and view the rare "Pitcher Plants" bog just before riding into town.
49 miles / 2,852 ft. elevation gain
As we leave Florence we'll be cycling by giant sand dunes for mile after mile. After stopping by the Umpqua Lighthouse, we'll carry on toward North Bend and Coos Bay. Our final destination is Bandon by the Beach, where our hotel, the Sunset Lodge, sits on a cliff overlooking a row of "haystack" rocks. A walk among them at night to the sound of the crashing waves is a surreal experience.
74 miles / 3,900 ft. elevation gain
Today we bike through numerous state parks including Cape Blanco, Battlerock and Humbug Mountain. Our destination is Gold Beach, where we stay on the beach (of course!) at Ireland's Rustic Lodges. Gold Beach is known for it's river inlet and jet boats that travel at high speeds up the river and through the woods. After riding all day you might have time. Dinner is on your own tonight, with a few great choices within walking distance.
55 miles / 2,500 ft. elevation gain
Today we cycle by Arch Rock, Thunder Rock, Rainbow Rock and other shoreline viewpoints shaped by wind and water. Our goal is Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park, a forest of giant redwoods and a fitting finale to our coast ride. After loading up the bikes and a change of clothes we shuttle from here back to Portland. You just rode the entire Oregon Coast Bike Route - Congratulations!
