We'll meet in Portland, Oregon on Saturday and start riding Sunday morning. Fly into Portland on Saturday, where a shuttle will pick you up at noon and take you to the ride start in Sandy. After checking into our hotel, you'll have the chance to get settled in and set up your bike. At an early evening orientation we'll provide an overview for the week, make introductions, and answer any questions you have.

On day one we ride from the town of Sandy along the Cascades Scenic Byway
to the town of Detroit. The Cascade range is full of quiet one-lane roads that
wind through the mountains. Many of the roads we'll ride, like this one, have little
to no traffic at all. Our hotel for the next two nights is the McKenzie Riverside
Cottages, a collection of beautiful cabins along the banks of the Mckenzie river.
77 miles / 4,500 ft. elevation gain
The next day we ride the spectacular McKenzie Pass Scenic Byway. It starts with
a gradual 30 mile climb to the top of the pass where you'll be treated to views of
volcanic lava flows and snow-capped mountains. After lunch at the top, those
who wish to ride the full 90 miles will drop down to the town of Sisters, the
turnaround point. Anyone wishing a shorter ride can simply turn around for a 30
mile downhill back to the hotel! At the end of the day we'll take a short hike to
some natural hot springs for a soak.
89 miles / 6,500 ft. elevation gain
Day four finds us back on the Cascades Scenic Byway on a section known as
the Aufderheide Memorial Drive. We start the morning by riding through a
covered bridge across the McKenzie river. There are not too many places you
can ride such a quiet scenic byway through this kind of old growth forest. Lunch
is next to a grove of redwood trees named for U.S. presidents. Our hotel for the
night is the Westfir Lodge, a small bed and breakfast that sits across from a
beautiful covered bridge.
62 miles / 4,000 ft. elevation gain
The next day takes us far into the backcountry as we ride only recently paved
forest roads on our way to Crater Lake. There will be some steep climbs
reaching 10% in spots before we are rewarded with a big downhill to the
Rouge-Umqua Scenic Byway. From there it's a short shuttle to our hotel for the
next two nights, the world famous Crater Lake Lodge, a beautiful National Park
Lodge overlooking the rim of Crater lake. Expect succulent dining and cocktails
around a large roaring fireplace in the great hall.
80 miles / 6,800 ft. elevation gain
Today we ride around Crater Lake! Ranked as one of the top one-day rides in
the country, the volcanic formed lake is visible for most of the ride as we circle
its' steep crater rim, ending back were we started for a second night at Crater Lake Lodge. Don't forget your camera because you'll want to take lots of pictures.
34 miles / 5,000 ft. elevation gain
Our final day we ride the entire Cascades Lakes Scenic Byway. This quiet Byway winds its way through the forest around numerous lakes with stunning mountain views. We'll have lunch on a picture-perfect lake before climbing up to Mount Bachelor, and then descending 15 miles to our hotel for the night, the Inn of the Seventh Mountain.
76 miles / 4,100 ft. elevation gain
The Cascades region is a land of contrasts. You'll ride through dense forest giving way to volcanic lava flows and blue shimmering lakes. Along the way we'll ride through covered bridges, take a dip in the local hot springs, visit a volcanic park, stay in beautiful resorts, dine at fine restaurants next to enchanting rivers, and ride around world famous Crater Lake. What more can you ask from a ride?
Today we say goodbye to our new cycling friends, and for those with flights, an early morning departure for Portland.
