My wife and I have been doing cycling tours since 1993. We have used Back Roads, Bicycle Adventures Timberline, Western Spirit and Bicycle Alaska. We have done at least one sometimes two trips annually. We found Cycling Escapes online and signed up for the Cactus to Ghost towns tour in Arizona, March 2007. We were so impressed we signed up for a second tour, Mammoth Lakes in the Fall 2007 and are currently preparing for their Solvang Tour next month.

Cycling Escapes is the only tour company that sends a detailed questionaire prior to the trip regarding your snack and liquid preferences. These items are provided throughout the tour .

Please be warned Cycling Escapes is not competing for the riders in the middle of the bell curve. Rich very clearly decribes both the distance and daily elevation gains on his web site. You don't have to be an elite cyclist but to enjoy these tours you should be conditioned.

The support and attitude provided by Cycling Escapes is superior. Typically we saw the support vehicle every twenty miles. Finally both the lodging and meals are the best available. We highly recomend his tours and hope you enjoy them also.

Bicycle Tour of Volcanic Scenic Byway

Shuttle from Reno to Lassen Park

This bicycle tour starts in Lassen Volcanic National Park. Fly into Reno Saturday night for an early Sunday morning departure. Our shuttle will pick you up Sunday morning at 8:00am and take you to Lassen Volcanic National Park for the start of the ride.

Day 1 - Lassen Volcanic National Park

Our cycling vacation starts in Lassen National Forest, where we'll climb up into Lassen Volcanic National Park, skirting the park's 10,457 foot dormant Volcano. The 6-8% grade climb up Lassen is punctuated by outstanding 100 mile views and bubbling hot springs. You'll actually smell the sulfur in the air from all the thermal activity! The peak typically retains some snow year-round, and after summiting, you'll enjoy a 16 mile downhill through the north end of the park on our way to Hat Creek Resort, a charming rustic hotel and the only civilization for miles.

60 miles / 6,000 ft. elevation gain

Day 2 - Modoc Byway to Mount Shasta

Today we follow the Modoc Volcanic Byway as it dives down into the Shasta -Trinity National Forest, making our way toward the town of Mount Shasta and the towering 14,162' peak that gives it its name. The day starts with a 20 mile gradual climb through forests broken by lava fields. A series of rolling hills will pack on the climbing on our way to Shasta and the Best Western Treehouse, our hotel for the next two nights.

84 miles / 5,000 ft. elevation gain

Day 3 - Mount Shasta

It's only a 29 mile ride today but odds are you'll feel it by the end of the day as we climb our second volcanoe for the week - Mount Shasta. Although the grades never go beyond 6-8%, the climb is 14 miles without a break until reaching the end of the road at 7,800'. Need we say the views from the top are outstanding! After lunch, that same 14 mile climb is now a well earned 14 mile descent back to Shasta and the chance to explore this eclectic outdoors town for the rest of the afternoon. Dinner is on your own tonight, with numerous restaurants in walking distance.

29 miles / 4,530 ft. elevation gain

Day 4 - Ashland to Crater Lake

Today we leave California and enter Oregon. After a short shuttle to avoid a busy section of highway, we start our ride in Ashland, Oregon along a forest road popular with local cyclists. Starting with a 7 mile 2,500' climb, we then wind our way up and down quiet roads before starting our final 15 mile climb up to Crater Lake.

For the next 2 nights we stay at Crater Lake Lodge. Enjoy cocktail hour in the Lodge dining hall. A roaring fireplace adds to the ambience, and the lake view sets the mood for an elegant dinner in the lodge restaurant.

102 miles / 7,000 ft. elevation gain

Day 5 - Crater Lake

Today we ride around Crater Lake! Ranked as one of the top one-day rides in the country, the volcanic formed lake is visible for most of the ride as we circle its' steep crater rim, ending back were we started. Try to spot the "Old Man of the Lake," a lone tree that fell into the cold waters years ago and still travels around the confines of the lake. Don't forget your camera because you'll want to take lots of pictures today.

40 miles / 4,000 ft. elevation gain

Day 6 - Crater Lake to Medford

Leaving Crater Lake, on the last day of this cycling vacation we cycle through the Rogue River National Forest on our way to Meford. A big 20 mile descent into Medford marks the end of the ride and the start of our shuttle back to Reno, arriving some time in the evening.

65 miles / 2,000 ft. elevation gain

Return Shuttle to Reno

After the Ride we shuttle back to Reno where we say goodbye to our new cycling friends until next time.
