Challenge Yourself on the Mountain Passes of the California Alps!
This Tour starts and ends in Lake Tahoe, California. Along the way we climb all the
classic mountain passes of Alpine County and Lake Tahoe. As beautiful as the
climbs in Europe, but with higher elevation and more challenging grades, this
Mountain Tour has everything.
Our first day of riding we climb up Mount Rose Highway to Lake Tahoe, where we'll
ride around one side of the lake on our way to Luther Pass. After climbing 7,740'
Luther Pass, we drop down to Sorenson's Lodge & Resort, our basecamp for the
next two nights.
Day two finds us on the Carson Pass Scenic Byway, as we ride up to 8,573' Carson
Pass. Considered to be one of the most beautiful of trans-Sierra highways, it has
won national honors for its design and scenic vistas. After the ride relax in the hot
springs at the nearby Grover Hot Springs State Park.
Day three we ride up Ebbetts Pass Scenic Byway to Bear Valley. We'll climb over
8,730' Ebbetts Pass, made famous by the "Death Ride," before cresting 8,050'
Pacific Grade Summit on our way to Bear Valley, our basecamp for the next two
nights.
On day four we'll tackle 9,624' Sonora Pass and day five we climb back over
Ebbetts Pass and then over 8,314' Monitor Pass, giving us two of the famous Sierra
passes for the day. Known as the toughest of the 5 passes of the Death Ride, the
climb over Monitor Pass is a constant 10% grade for 9.6 miles. But don't worry - you
can do it!
On the last day we ride back over Monitor Pass to Markleeville. Kingsbury Grade
rises out of the desert like a phantom, and we climb up and over it on our way back
to beautiful Lake Tahoe and the end of this incredible climbing tour.
